How long to beat
How long is GTA 6? What's known, and our estimate
Image: Rockstar Games
GTA 6 has no official length. Neither Rockstar nor Take-Two has given one. Not announced
The New York Times reported that one developer's run took about 80 hours, covering the main story plus some optional goals. Reported
Our estimate, not a Rockstar figure: about 50-70 hours for a typical player's main story. Expected
Estimates so far, and how ours works
| Step or claim | Result | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Main story as a share of main story plus extras | About 59% in GTA V and Red Dead Redemption 2 | Expected |
| If the 80-hour run was a full run with extras | Main story of about 47 hours | Expected |
| If that run was nearly all story | Main story of up to about 70 hours | Expected |
| Our estimate, rounded | About 50-70 hours for a typical player's main story | Expected |
| Older insider claim | Rumor: main story shorter than Red Dead Redemption 2's | Rumor |
Our estimate is our own inference from precedent, not a Rockstar figure. We'll replace it with real data after launch.

What the 80-hour report actually says
The figure comes from a New York Times feature, which we read in The Star’s syndicated copy. It says Rob Nelson, co-head of Rockstar North, played the game in February and took about 80 hours on the main story plus some optional goals that affect the narrative.
Many headlines went further. Some say Rockstar confirmed an 80-hour game. Others say the story alone takes 80 hours, or that the run skipped side content. The wording supports none of that, and three limits matter:
- It’s one developer’s run, not an official length.
- It includes optional goals, and we can’t tell how much of the time they took.
- It happened about nine months before launch.
How we got our estimate
This is our own inference, not a Rockstar figure, and the first table shows each step. In GTA V and Red Dead Redemption 2, the main story took a little under three-fifths of the time players spent on the main story plus extras. If Nelson’s run worked like a full run with extras, that ratio gives the low end. If it was nearly all story, the main story sits near the high end.
We rounded the low end up because a developer knows where to go, while a first-time player wanders. The weak spots are real: the sum rests on one run and two older games, and a February build may not match the final game.
The rumor in the table is an older insider claim from 2024. It predates the New York Times report and sits at the low edge of our range.
Why your own time will differ
Your pace and appetite for side content matter more than any headline number. Rockstar says the story doesn’t take you everywhere, so exploring the map adds time. The Ultimate Edition reportedly adds two exclusive side-mission quest lines. All of these numbers are for the single-player game, since no online mode has been announced.
What about 100%?
We don’t have a GTA 6 number, and we won’t invent one. In GTA V and Red Dead Redemption 2, completionists spent roughly three to four times the main-story hours, though those figures come from a smaller sample. Read that as a sense of scale, not a forecast. For more on how GTA 6 differs from GTA V, see GTA 6 vs GTA 5.
What we’ll add after launch
- Hours reported in reviews, with credit.
- Player averages for the main story, extras and 100%, once there’s enough data.
- Whether our estimate held up. When real numbers exist, we’ll replace it and say so here.
