GTA 6's map is the largest Rockstar has made, with six named regions across the fictional state of Leonida. Confirmed

Rockstar hasn't given an area in square kilometers or miles, only comparisons with its earlier games. Not announced

A free map to print yourself arrives on launch day, November 19, on Rockstar's GTA 6 site. Confirmed

How big is it? Every size statement so far

MeasureWhat was said, and what's unclearStatus
Official figureNot announced. Rockstar has published no area and no full top-down map.Not announced
All earlier Rockstar mapsThe largest the studio has made, by a clear margin, Rockstar's Aaron Garbut told Game Informer. That compares Rockstar's own games, not every game ever made.Confirmed
GTA V's whole map (Los Santos and Blaine County)About twice the size. This is the press's paraphrase of Garbut in Game Informer, repeated in Edge. He gave no area.Reported
Red Dead Redemption 2's mapAbout three times the size. It began with creators' accounts of a Rockstar North preview (TGG was first), and the New York Times now attributes it to the studio.Reported
GTA IV, GTA V and Red Dead Redemption 2 togetherNearly as much land as the three playable maps added up, in Edge's account of what Rockstar told it. Edge doesn't say whether the Leonida Keys are counted.Reported
Los Santos, GTA V's cityVice City alone is about twice the size, Rockstar North co-studio head Rob Nelson told creator Davy Jones, per Insider Gaming.Reported
GTA V's areas outside the cityBuilt-up areas outside Vice City are about 11 times GTA V's equivalent, from the same Nelson remark. Other reports word it differently, so what's being counted isn't clear.Reported

These statements use different bases, so don't combine them into one figure. We explain why below the tables.

The region names are on Rockstar's site. The Vice City areas trace to Rockstar's location text too, but we read them through press reports.

How the map works in the game

QuestionWhat's knownStatus
Does the story cover the whole map?No. Rupert Humphries, Rockstar's senior VP of narrative, says the story takes you around much of the map but not all of it. The rest is there to explore.Confirmed
Is it all open from the start? Not necessarily. Reports based on IGN and Edge say most of the map opens early in the story. That doesn't mean every region is open from the first minute.Reported
How does the in-game map fill in?Unexplored areas stay hidden until you visit them, as in GTA V and Red Dead Redemption 2, Rob Nelson told Famitsu. We read this in a fan site's English translation.Reported
How many interiors are there? No official count. Aaron Garbut told Edge there are an order of magnitude more than in earlier Rockstar games.Confirmed

Press estimates, not official figures, and the square-kilometer versions of the first six rows are our conversions. Complex calls its own numbers rough, and its GTA V figure comes from a 2013 guide-book map scan. Red Dead Redemption 2 isn't listed: coverage puts it close to GTA V, and sources disagree on which is larger.

Why the size comparisons don’t add up

Many headlines call the size comparisons confirmed. Only one meets that bar: that this is Rockstar’s largest map. The rest reach us through press and creators, and they can’t all describe one measurement. Coverage usually puts GTA V and Red Dead Redemption 2 close together in size, so one map can’t be twice the first and three times the second by the same ruler. Adding up three older maps is a third yardstick again.

Our reading is that each comparison counts something different: the whole playable area in one, land alone in another, with or without water. That’s our explanation, not Rockstar’s. Even GTA V’s own size changes from source to source, as the last table shows. Game Informer’s 2013 tour of that map used the same kind of language, including a comparison that counted underwater areas.

So take these as a sense of scale, and don’t turn them into square kilometers. It’s also why this page gives no area for GTA 6. The figures on fan sites are extrapolations, and some draw on a leaked image.

What the size means when you play

Don’t rely on the story to show you everything. If you want to see the whole state, plan to head off on your own between missions, and expect to uncover the in-game map as you go. For how long that could take, see how long GTA 6 is. For a wider look at what changed, see GTA 6 vs GTA 5.

Treat any exact interior count with suspicion too. Rockstar has given a scale, not a number.

Where the names come from

Leonida is usually described as a fictional take on Florida, and Vice City as one on Miami, with the Everglades and the Florida Keys also named as inspirations. Rockstar doesn’t put it in those words. Fan guides list more Vice City districts than our table does. We can’t trace those names to Rockstar, so we leave them out.

How to get the printable map

  • Wait for launch day. No full official map exists yet, so any “complete GTA 6 map” you can download today isn’t Rockstar’s.
  • Take it from Rockstar’s site. You don’t need to buy anything. For the exact moment the game itself opens, see the release time page.
  • Don’t buy special paper yet. We don’t know what print size the file is made for.
  • Don’t count on a paper map in the box. Rockstar hasn’t said either way, and the paid poster has no fixed date.

What we’ll add after launch

  • A direct link to Rockstar’s printable map.
  • An official area, if Rockstar publishes one or the map carries a scale. We won’t work one out from a map without a scale.
  • Which regions are open at the start, and how much of the map the story covers, credited to whoever reports it.

We won’t build an interactive map: that takes in-game data we don’t collect.
