GTA 6 download size: how much space you need and when to pre-load
Image: Rockstar Games
You need up to 212 GB of free space, depending on your console (PS5: 212 GB). Confirmed
On Xbox, catalog data reported by several outlets shows about 225 GB, more than Rockstar's figure, so plan for extra space there. Reported
Pre-load starts on November 10, 2026: on PS5 at midnight local time, and on Xbox at midnight GMT, which is Mon, Nov 9, 7:00 PM in New York. Confirmed
Will GTA 6 fit on your console?

How pre-load works
Pre-loading means downloading the game before release day, so it’s ready the moment it unlocks. The files stay locked until the game unlocks in your region, and our release time tool shows when that is for you.
According to Rockstar’s pre-load FAQ, the download starts by itself if your console is set up like this:
- PS5: automatic downloads are turned on, and the console is on or in Rest Mode.
- Xbox Series X|S: automatic updates are turned on, and the console is on or in Sleep mode.
Rockstar moved pre-load forward from November 12, the date in its June announcement, so older articles may still show the earlier date.
How much space to leave
The size above is Rockstar’s upper limit for the pre-load, and the exact amount depends on your console. It isn’t a final install size: a launch-day update could add more, although none has been announced. Rockstar hasn’t published separate figures for the Xbox Series S or the PS5 Pro. Xbox catalog data reported by Notebookcheck and others shows a bigger download than Rockstar’s figure, and neither Rockstar nor Microsoft has explained the gap.
What “code in box” means
There’s no disc in a boxed copy of GTA 6, only a download code. You redeem the code on the PlayStation Store or Microsoft Store and then download the whole game, so you need the same free space and internet connection as someone who bought it digitally. Once your box arrives, you can redeem the code and pre-load before release day. Delivery and collection dates vary by retailer.
Two things to check before you buy a box:
- Each code works once. It’s tied to the account that redeems it, so a second-hand box whose code was already used won’t give you the game.
- PlayStation boxes are tied to regions. PlayStation’s GTA VI compatibility page lists which boxes work with which account regions. Boxes sold in Saudi Arabia or the UAE, for example, only work on accounts registered in that country.
Prices for each edition, digital and boxed, are on our GTA 6 price page.
