Footage, forecasts and marketing
| Claim | What it says | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Digital Foundry on 60 fps | Forecast: extremely unlikely, at least at launch, because the CPU is the limit | Expected |
| Digital Foundry on Xbox Series S | Forecast from 2024-25: about 720p. Based on trailers and hardware specs, not a test | Expected |
| Ray tracing in An Extended Look | Digital Foundry links the lighting and reflections to expanded ray tracing. Exact features are unconfirmed | Reported |
| Removed PlayStation France page | Reportedly listed PSSR upscaling and advanced ray tracing for PS5 Pro, then came down. No statement from Sony or Rockstar | Reported |
| Features PlayStation Blog names | DualSense haptic feedback, adaptive triggers and speaker effects, Tempest 3D AudioTech and fast SSD loading. No frame rate or resolution | Confirmed |
| The "plays best on" tag | PS5, on Rockstar's site. A marketing tag, not a technical comparison | Confirmed |
Forecasts are analysts' views, not tests. We read Digital Foundry's findings through press coverage.
How earlier Rockstar games went
| Game and console | What happened | Status |
|---|---|---|
| GTA V on PS4 and Xbox One | 30 fps, with a 60 fps option only from the 2022 upgrade | Reported |
| GTA V on PS5 and Xbox Series X | Three modes: Fidelity (4K with ray tracing at 30 fps), Performance (upscaled 4K at 60 fps) and Performance RT (upscaled 4K with ray tracing at 60 fps) | Reported |
| GTA V on Xbox Series S | Upscaled 4K in Fidelity and 1080p in Performance, with no Performance RT mode | Reported |
| Red Dead Redemption 2 | No official 60 fps upgrade on current consoles | Reported |
Precedent only. It shows the kind of split Rockstar has used, not what GTA 6 will have.

Where the frame-rate report comes from
The target comes from Rob Nelson, co-head of Rockstar North, speaking to invited creators, and outlets such as Push Square relayed it in August. It isn’t a formal Rockstar announcement. There’s no official spec sheet, and PlayStation Blog’s posts on the game don’t mention frame rate, resolution or modes.
Some headlines turned this into “confirmed” or “no performance mode”. The more careful reports say a 60 fps mode is undecided. Asked about it, Nelson reportedly said he’d need to check with the technical team, and that reached us second-hand too.
Said, measured and forecast
The figures above don’t all carry the same weight:
- Said: the target is a remark relayed by people who heard it, not a published spec.
- Measured: Digital Foundry’s reading covers one video, An Extended Look, captured on PS5. The video itself is capped, so it can’t show anything higher, and it isn’t the final game.
- Forecast: Digital Foundry’s views on 60 fps and the Xbox Series S are expert predictions, not tests.
The “plays best on PS5” tag on Rockstar’s site is marketing tied to the PlayStation partnership. It doesn’t tell you how PS5 and Xbox compare.
PS5 Pro: wait for tests before you upgrade
Neither Rockstar nor Sony has announced PS5 Pro enhancements. The removed PlayStation France page deserves caution: GTA BOOM notes that part of its text appears borrowed from another game’s page, and neither company has commented on it. Even if its features prove real, they wouldn’t mean a higher frame rate. Digital Foundry’s forecast rests on the CPU: the Pro’s is close to the base PS5’s, so extra graphics power wouldn’t lift that limit.
Xbox Series S
Rockstar lists the Series S as a launch console, but no Series S figures or footage have been published. The forecast in the table is old and rests on the console’s smaller memory, so don’t read it as a test. If it’s your only console, the game will run on it. We just can’t say how well until launch. In the meantime, check your storage on our download size page.
Could a later update change this?
Possibly, but the table shows Rockstar’s record points both ways: one game gained new modes years later, and the other didn’t. That’s precedent, not a plan. If you’re hoping for higher frame rates on PC, no PC version has been announced, as our PC tracker explains. For every other console question, see GTA 6 platforms.
What we’ll add after launch
- Real frame rates, resolutions and modes for each console, from tests by Digital Foundry and others, with credit. We don’t test the game ourselves.
- Any update that changes performance.
- What testers find between PS5 and Xbox, and whether PS5 Pro adds anything.
