Why the reported 225 GB Xbox figure for GTA 6 looks bigger than Rockstar's 212 GB

The reported Xbox size of about 225 GB may not be bigger than Rockstar’s 212 GB at all. It’s the same download as 209.86 GiB, and Rockstar hasn’t said which kind of gigabyte it means. Until pre-load opens, plan for the higher number on Xbox.
One download, two units
A gigabyte (GB) is 1,000,000,000 bytes. A gibibyte (GiB) is 1,073,741,824 bytes, about 7% more. Screens often label both “GB”.
Output Lag gives the Xbox package as 225,336,918,016 bytes. That’s 225.34 GB or 209.86 GiB, which is why two numbers are going around. Notebookcheck says the Xbox Store shows 209.86 while catalog data shows 225.34.
Rockstar’s figure can be read two ways:
- If its 212 is in binary units, as Output Lag reads it, the Xbox download sits under the limit.
- If it’s in decimal GB, the Xbox download runs about 13 GB over.
Rockstar doesn’t say which.
What’s official, reported and speculation
- Official (confirmed): Rockstar says the pre-load needs up to 212 GB depending on your device. Sony says to clear at least 212 GB on PS5. Sony’s figure is an instruction, not a measured size, so it doesn’t prove Xbox is bigger than PS5.
- Reported: about 225 GB on Xbox, from Microsoft catalog data relayed through an X account and the press. Neither Microsoft nor Rockstar has confirmed it.
- Speculation: Notebookcheck says a day-one patch may explain the gap if the Xbox version really is bigger. No patch has been announced, and nothing in these numbers shows one.
- Not published: any Series X versus Series S figure. Don’t assume the Series S download is smaller.
What to do
- PS5: clear at least 212 GB.
- Xbox: aim for about 225 GB plus some spare room, which covers both readings and any launch-day update. Failing that, 212 GB on your storage screen should still cover the reported size, because Output Lag says that screen counts in binary units.
- Series S: start now. Output Lag’s sums put the game at more than half of the console’s space for games, and Series X|S games can’t run from a USB drive.
- Check on the night: Xbox pre-load opens at midnight GMT on November 10 (7 PM ET on November 9). Your console should then show the real size, and we’ll update this story if it differs.
Our pre-load checklist covers the console settings, and our download size page stays current.
