Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick talked about GTA 6 on stage at WSJ Tech: California in Napa Valley on November 4. His answers made headlines, but they added no new figures or dates for the game. We haven’t seen a full transcript, so this story relies on press accounts of the session.

The budget: expensive, but no number

Pressed on the cost, Zelnick said the game was expensive and took a long time, and that’s as far as he went. He didn’t confirm the outside estimates of $1 billion or more. Asked whether the money would come back in days or weeks, he wouldn’t make a prediction. Any budget figure you see is still someone else’s estimate.

The delay: Rockstar’s request

His fullest answer covered the second delay, announced on November 6, 2025, which moved the game to November 19, 2026. By GTA BOOM’s account, he said the request came from Rockstar’s team through Jennifer Colby, who runs the studio’s business side. He described the extra time as essential, not optional, and said the timing didn’t please him, coming 10 days after a board retreat.

He then set that decision against an unnamed high-profile game that stuck to its schedule, shipped and was pulled because it didn’t work. He refused to name it. Dexerto reads the remark as a nod to Cyberpunk 2077, but that’s Dexerto’s interpretation, not his words.

Piracy: accepted, not ignored

“Piracy is a fact of life,” he said, according to Notebookcheck, after a question about Roblox clones of Take-Two’s games. He compared games with film and music, and argued they’re less exposed because they’re large, complex and tied to company servers for the full experience. If piracy became a real problem, he said, Take-Two would answer with legal and then technical work.

That was a general point about Take-Two’s games, not news about GTA 6. Notebookcheck notes that neither Take-Two nor Rockstar has said what anti-piracy protection the game will use. The game isn’t out yet, so any cracked copy offered today is a scam.

What he didn’t say
